SharePoint specialists Pentalogic Technology have today announced the release of v2 of their PivotPoint web part for SharePoint. V2 adds significant new functionality, including Pivot Charting to this well established product.
Pivot Point v1 was launched back in 2009 and is the only product on the market to bring Pivot Table functionality direct to SharePoint list data. Its always been a very popular product with certain parts of our market, says Pentalogic CTO and founder Ryan Wheeler. People in the finance sector, for example, have a clear understanding of how useful a Pivot Table is for summarizing and analysing long lists. So we tend to sell a lot of PivotPoints to places like banks, insurers and accountants.
Although the finance guys are happy to look at their figures in a table, for the rest of us dashboards with charts and graphs can make things a lot easier to understand at a glance, says Wheeler. So for v2 of PivotPoint we have added charting functionality to the mix.
We think its very exciting." Wheeler continued "Because PivotPoint is connected directly to your SharePoint list data charts and tables update dynamically. So for example if you had PivotPoint looking at a sales list, you could set up dashboard with a table and a column chart and literally watch your sales growing in front of you as new items were added to your list. Thats something we could all enjoy doing! Anyone who has tried using Excel Services to display Pivot Tables in SharePoint will understand what an advance this is.
And," Wheeler explained, "because PivotPoint is connected directly to the list we have also been able to provide a drill down from the web part, to the relevant filtered group of list items. So, if you had a dashboard monitoring Help Desk Performance, with a Pie Chart showing tickets by team member, you could click on the segment of the chart relating to one team member and go straight to a filtered view of the list showing just that persons tickets.
With version 2 PivotPoint provides a unique interactive and dynamic summary interface for SharePoint list data," Wheeler continued. " we use it all the time in house: in our sales dashboard of course, to monitor staff vacations and absence from work, to track Helpdesk performance. There are so many potential uses for PivotPoint that its difficult to think of a SharePoint deployment that wouldnt benefit from one.
Weve also worked hard to keep PivotPoint simple. Pivot Tables are powerful analysis tools and when we added Pivot Charting to the mix it would have been easy to get carried away and create a highly complex application, explains Wheeler. We understand that there are some occasions where users may want to perform very complex analysis and create very fancy tables and graphs there are great tools already on the market for this kind of work. But for most SharePoint users, most of the time, the need is for an application that is quick and easy to set up, and delivers tables, charts and graphs which are easy for the user to interpret at a glance.
